7 Aspects when choosing an Interim Expert/Manager!

... which can quickly become stumbling blocks to success!

 

?: What type of interim expert/manager do you need?

For a given topic/task, the first step is to clarify which industry and functional competences the desired candidate should have and whether a technical expert, organising manager or visionary leader is needed?

 

?: Required mix of professionalism, personality and experience.

The right mix of skills is crucial, i.e. do not focus too one-sidedly on professional qualifications and expertise. A good academic education is the basis, but experience from successful projects for many companies − also in other sectors − means experiential knowledge for quick and targeted decisions and makes for a successful personality.

 

?: Need for a cultural fit.

In the interview, talk to candidates not only about facts, figures and data, but also about soft facts. Check the values of your company and those of the interim expert/manager for cultural fit so that the interim expert/manager does not become a foreign body.

 

?: Don't just decide on the basis of price.

A quote by James Goldsmith says: "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys". The price (daily rate etc.) of the interim expert/manager includes a bundle of qualifications, experience and added value, which should bring you a positive "Return on Interim Management" (RoIM) of up to several times through increased efficiency, savings etc.

 

?: Make sure precise job description.

Formulate your topic/task, the most important objectives and possible action steps as precisely as possible. If you have difficulties with this, use the interim expert/manager with his know-how as a sparring partner, idea provider or coach.

 

?: Ensure clear goals.

Agree clear goals, sub-goals, measures, steps, etc. with the interim expert/manager in writing and ensure sufficient flexibility. The common goal is the success of the project.

 

?: Ensure necessary data, resources and powers to act.

You must have access to the necessary data and resources yourself and make them available to the interim expert/manager - together with the necessary powers to act.
