Mauro Cossu studied sociology at Università La Sapienza in Rome/Italy and graduated with a master's degree in sociology and communication.
During his studies, he financed his living expenses as a Life Insurance Consultant and also began his professional career after graduating as a Life Insurance Consultant at RAS Assicurazioni in Rome, part of the Allianz Group, where he was responsible in particular for insurance consulting as well as recruitment and training of sales staff.
He then found a new challenge as a Consultant & Project Manager in the telecommunications and utilities sector at BTC Consulting, an Italian niche consultancy that was later acquired by the CAP Gemini Group. In this position, he spent several years developing his expertise in organisational projects aimed at increasing employee performance and potential by conducting process and organisational analyses as well as performance and potential assessments, and by aligning process and organisational structures with clients' business strategies, he measurably increased efficiency, reduced operating costs as well as identified and promoted talent.
He then joined Ernst & Young as an HR Expert in the HR team for Italy and the HR team for Central Western Europe (CWE) based in Paris, which covered 23 countries. He was primarily responsible or jointly responsible for internal E&Y talent and performance management, the design and implementation of learning curricula, the creation of a competence passport for every expert in the region, the design and moderation of HR governance and training events for new managers and partners, as well as the implementation of the PM system in Italy.
In the next step, he became Head of HR & Group Head of Organisational Development at SAB Miller Italy (Birra Peroni S.p.A.), which generated a turnover of around 250 million euros with approx. 400 employees. He managed three HR employees at headquarters and six HR employees at the plants, was a member of the European HR Strategic Committee, was involved in the sale of a distribution company while preserving jobs, reduced costs by 15% as well as ensured the successful cultural integration of a family business into a multinational company. He also drew up succession and development plans as well as remuneration strategies, and implemented an optimised recruitment, performance and talent management.
After successfully establishing a new business division for the comprehensive transformation of clients' personnel and organisational development areas as an Equity Partner at Fedro Training & Coaching, Mauro Cossu moved to Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri S.p.A. Società Benefit, one of the largest private healthcare providers in Italy, which generated approx. 330 million euros in revenue with around 4,200 employees in 18 healthcare facilities, including five clinics and an environmental research centre. He started as HR & Organisation Senior Manager and progressed to Group HR & Organisation Director. In this role, he was finally responsible in particular for developing and implementing the HR strategy, managing 15 HR employees at headquarters and 40 employees in various facilities, negotiating collective agreements for medical and non-medical staff, and ensuring compliance with the HR budget despite significant salary increases. He also played a key role in the takeover and integration of a 200-bed hospital and pioneered the first international recruitment of nurses from Albania and South America.
