Dr. Per Grufman holds a Master of Science in Biology from Stockholm University in Sweden as well as a PhD in Medicine from the Karolinska Institutet, also in Stockholm.

After graduating, he began his professional career as a Team Leader at Accuro Immunology AB in Stockholm, where he established animal models (mice) for the development of therapeutic cancer vaccines (Pharma). As the first employee alongside the founders, he set up a new laboratory and was jointly responsible for defining the strategy in the areas of intellectual property as well as research and development. He was promoted to VP Murine Research and worked closely with the board and investors.

As a next step, he became VP Research & Development at AbSorber AB in Stockholm. Once again, he was the first employee of the start-up, which focused on diagnostics and medical devices for use in organ transplantation (medtech). He was responsible for establishing a predominantly virtual organisation for product development and manufacturing with a central R&D team in Sweden, as well as identifying and establishing strategic R&D partnerships, for example with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore/USA. Furthermore, he conducted clinical trials and was responsible for the market launch of products in Europe and the USA, including obtaining the necessary product approvals. In addition, he was actively involved in sales activities across Europe and the USA.

Dr. Per Grufman subsequently moved to Cepheid in Stockholm as Senior Director R&D, where he was responsible for establishing a product development organisation in Sweden in the fields of diagnostics and medical technology, which he expanded from 15 to 55 employees. He established a fully-fledged R&D organisation, including new laboratories, was responsible for the development of several products for global markets, and was involved in quality audits in most markets. He was promoted to Executive Director R&D and, following the acquisition (M&A) by Danaher, was responsible for introducing the Danaher business system to the R&D teams as well as setting up an R&D team in Suzhou/China.

After eleven years at Cepheid, he decided to take on a new challenge as VP R&D at LumiraDx (MedTech) in Glasgow/UK. He established a new R&D site outside Glasgow, as well as an organisation for product lifecycle management, which encompassed research, product support and shelf-life studies. He managed the company’s rapid growth during the pandemic, as well as the necessary personnel adjustments, through effective organisational development.

He subsequently became CEO of BioCrucible in Cambridge/UK, where he was responsible in particular for transforming the company – with around 80 employees – from an innovation and research facility into a product development company specialising in molecular and immunological diagnostics and medical devices.
