Dr. Donald Hlahla holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Language & Learning from the University of Zimbabwe, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Business Policy & Performance (Strategic Thinking & Management) from the Nottingham Business School/Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. He also holds a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Corporate Governance from the Namibia Business School (NBS)/University of Namibia (UNAM).
He began his professional career in Zimbabwe in the public sector as a Science Teacher (biology, physics and mathematics), where he worked for six years. He then moved into the corporate HR function, where he held various positions – such as HR & Administrative Officer, HR Manager and HR Executive – in several companies in the private and public sectors. During this time, he worked intensively and successfully on organisational design and development, systematic competency assessments, performance management systems, structured training programmes, talent management, as well as corporate policies and codes of conduct.
After moving to Namibia, he was a Lecturer in business strategy and marketing at the International University of Management (IUM) and was later appointed Dean of all academic departments. He played a central role in developing the curricula for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes, contributed significantly to the institution’s transition from a college to a fully-fledged university, and supported the accreditation processes with the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA).
He then decided to focus on full-time consultancy work for private-sector companies across various industries, as well as for public and non-governmental organisations. His consultancy work spans the service sector (financial services, media, hospitality and tourism), health and social care, to public and local government bodies.
As a person, Dr. Donald Hlahla is characterised by his lifelong commitment to structured thinking, discipline, and the strive for and support of human development. He also holds a Diploma in Human Resources Management (Motivation & Productivity) from the Zimbabwe Institute of People Management, an Executive Diploma in General Management from the Zimbabwe Institute of Management, as well as a Certificate in Education from Derby Lonsdale College (now the University of Derby) in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, he is an author of books and journal articles on topics such as HR management & development, governance models, as well as the development of emotional intelligence in the African context. He is also a Member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Management (ZIM) and the Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ).
He is a Corporate and HR Consultant and Facilitator for executives in Namibia and East Africa, as well as across the 16-country Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and South-East Asia. His facilitation style is strategic, participatory and results-oriented, making him highly effective in multicultural and cross-sectoral environments. He has the ability to engage with people in a goal-oriented manner across cultural, professional and hierarchical boundaries.
